Estimadas familias,
Como ustedes saben, Polk County Utilities está construyendo una estación de agua excedente detrás de nuestra propiedad. Esta mañana, nosotros y nuestros negocios vecinos perdimos el acceso a nuestra agua. Ellos no nos notificaron con antelación sobre el corte de agua, y no fueron capaces de decirnos cuando iban a ser capaces de volver a encender el agua. Dear families,
As you may be aware, Polk County Utilities is currently building a surplus water station behind our property. This morning, we and our neighboring businesses lost access to our water. They did not notify us ahead of time about the water outage, and they were unable to tell us when they would be able to turn the water back on. This created a sanitary issue for the school, with students not being able to flush toilets or wash hands. We thank you all for your quick response in picking up your students this morning.

Thankfully, we DO now have water, and we will have school as normally planned tomorrow.

On another note, the Polk County School Board voted on Tuesday to change the following early dismissal dates to full days of instruction to make up time missed due to the hurricane. Mi Escuela Montessori will follow their direction in this.

We hope all of our families are doing well, are safe, and have sufficient food and energy. The school is in good condition for opening on Wednesday. We have electricity, our food supply will be delivered tomorrow, and we have cleaned up the campus. We did sustain damage to the gymnasium air conditioner. We are waiting for that damage to be assessed, and we have plans for making sure that if the temperature gets too hot, students have an alternate location. Students will eat at their picnic tables for now. (Thankfully, the weather will be beautiful.)
Mi Escuela Montessori, generally, follows the calendar for Polk County Public Schools. This calendar is submitted to the State of Florida to ensure that all schools have the proper number of school days and the state mandated instructional hours. At this time, PCPS has not made any changes to the scheduled early release day on October 17th and the teacher work day on October 18th.

However, Mi Escuela Montessori will NOT have an early release day on Thursday, October 17th. Students will dismiss at their regularly scheduled dismissal time. We will have after care activities, including thematic clubs.

Friday, October 18th, remains a teacher work day (unless PCPS cancels this teacher work day), and students do NOT report to school on that day.

We are postponing the Graze and Raise fundraiser. The new date will be released once we confirm with our venue.

We are a school family. We are blessed to have each other, to lean in to each other, and to show each other grace during challenging times. As we get back to school, we understand that many of our families are living without electricity, staying with family members, and/or have limited access to the internet. We understand that families may not have clean uniforms, water bottles for PE, and the ability to pack lunches. Our school has confirmed that we will have breakfast and lunch as expected on Wednesday. Many of our staff members, as well, many have trouble making it to school. There may be disruptions in routines. We may be short-staffed, and it may take us longer to respond than normal.

Here are some ways that you can help:

Be patient with your teachers and office staff, who may have a lot of communication to catch up on and yet not be able to access email from outside the school.
If you are able to send fresh fruit or vegetables to your child’s classroom to ensure the students have snack even if the assigned person is not able to send that in, please email your child’s teacher and let her know.
If you have extra water bottles, please send them so we can make sure all children are hydrated on the playground. We will label them with student names, and they can be refilled at our water fountains.
If you have packages of unopened toiletries or underwear of any size, please send them in.
If you are available to help carpool another student whose transportation has been affected by the storm, please post on our school Facebook page.
If you have a trailer, please, please consider helping us move the debris off the school property to the landfill. Right now, it is in a tidy pile. Once it gets wet, though, it will be harder to move.
Partner with your teachers to ensure that your children get caught up from lost learning. This might include watching videos on how to do math, reading together a little more, practicing sight words and math facts.

Post Hurricane Update

We hope that our families are all doing well after the storm. Please reach out to Kelly De La Cruz and let her know if you and your family need help getting post-storm assistance or if you sustained major damage from the storm. The school has some damaged fences and a lot of debris to be cleaned, but at this time, no major damage has been noted.

At this time, no decision has been made regarding Monday’s operations for PCPS schools and offices or Mi Escuela Montessori. Polk County Public Schools will provide updates over the weekend on their social media and/or website if they decide to close operations on Monday. To make things straightforward (at least for Monday), if they close Monday, we close Monday. If they open Monday, we open Monday. Because of this, we need to make sure we are prepared to receive students Monday morning.

Tomorrow, from 8am-11am, we will work on resetting the classrooms, cleaning up the grounds, and making sure everything is ready to go for Monday morning. We invite all volunteers to come and help. Please wear comfortable "yard work" clothing.

Children (as long as you supervise them directly and they are wearing appropriate closed-toe shoes at all times), family and friends are all welcome to come help. No volunteer clearance is required for this.

Tasks we aim to complete:

Move all sand bags to a storage location (save in case we get another storm)
Reset furniture in classrooms (completing necessary cleaning along the way).
Rake and bag all storm debris (ideally to be brought to landfill tomorrow)
Remove any damaged items
Fences need to be reset/repaired.
Repair gardens, prune or chainsaw trees and limbs that are unsafe.
Check the bolts on the playground to make sure they didn't loosen in the storm.
Consider bringing pressure washer if you have one to rapidly clean decks.
Consider bringing weed whacker or mower o assist in getting fields ready for Monday.

Things we need:
1. People with trailers willing to bring the debris to the dump. We can not leave in front of the school and because we are a business, the county doesn't do free pick up. It must be brought to the dump. Ideally, we'd be able to put debris right on the trailer during cleanup and get rid of it right away.
2. If you have garden tools, rakes, gloves, black trash bags, chainsaw, etc., pressure washer, lawn care equipment, wheel barrows, etc. please bring labeled with your name.

Hurricane Closing Update

Dear families,
This is an important update regarding Hurricane Milton.
This storm is expected to continue strengthening and impact our state in the coming days.
Based on the most current forecast, we do not expect significant weather in Polk County tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 7. Consequently, all PCPS schools and offices, including Mi Escuela Montessori, will remain open during regular hours tomorrow.
However, in light of the approaching storm, we will be canceling or rescheduling all after-school clubs for tomorrow. Students in After Care must be picked up before 4pm. Please make sure to fill out an absence report on the website if your child will be absent Monday due to the storm.

Please be advised that Mi Escuela Montessori will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 8, through Friday Oct. 11 in response to this storm.
At this time, no decision has been made regarding Friday’s operations.

Out of field Teachers

Mi Escuela Montessori Community,
Florida law requires each school to notify parents of all students in a class being served by a teacher assigned teaching duties dealing with subject matter outside the field in which the teacher is certified. Florida law also requires the teacher to actively work towards in-field certification, and progress towards compliance is monitored by the district. Below is a list of all teachers and their certifications. The list also notes those who are working out of field for the 2024-25 school year and also actively pursuing the required certifications. Finally, we’ve included Montessori certifications on the list.
