Beyond the Classroom: Cultivating a Culture of Intellectual Risk

This year, Mi Escuela Montessori reached a transformative milestone as our inaugural 6th-grade Academic Team represented us in the Polk County Public Schools Academic Competition.

For a young charter school team, the true victory wasn't the final standing—it was the boldness to enter the arena. Competing for the first time against long-established district programs, our six students demonstrated the intellectual curiosity and poise that define an authentic Montessori education and took 11th place.

Building Competence and Confidence Through Disciplined Practice

This debut was the result of a year-long commitment to rigorous preparation. Under the mentorship of our Academic Coach, Dr. Lois Horn Diaz, our students met weekly to bridge Montessori inquiry with the high-pressure format of district-level competition.

Dr. Beep-Beep, as the students call her, is a cornerstone of our school’s expanded vision, leading several vital enrichment initiatives that challenge our students to think bigger:

  • Gifted Enrichment & Academic Coaching: Pushing students to apply their knowledge under pressure and across disciplines.

  • Shakespeare Club: Building literacy and public speaking through classical performance.

  • Video Editing & Digital Media: Developing 21st-century storytelling skills.

The Result: A Foundation of Perseverance

By stepping up to represent Mi Escuela Montessori, these six students proved that they have the grit to try something new and the collaborative spirit to succeed as a team. This isn't just about a single competition; it is about building a school culture where students are empowered to test their limits, pursue excellence, and lead with confidence.
